Serene seclusion

Situated in a beloved section of Santa Monica Canyon, this residence engages Irving Gill’s pared down formal expressionism as its guiding principle. The act of doing less in a sea of more establishes the home’s standout presence within the streetscape. Through restrained design and unadorned geometric exploration, the home allows for reflection, openness and serenity.

Arched openings across the entrance establish a distinctive design aesthetic that continues to meander inward from outside, inviting a cooling breeze and moments of quiet contemplation. The interplay of curved and linear forms inside create a soft yet balanced harmony throughout.

The residence’s second-level, set back from the street, engages with the neighborhood’s streetscape blending in more with the original single story bungalows of the area than the newer oversized homes. Working within a minimal, stripped-back approach, the studio integrated a beautiful yet simple material palette – where less becomes more.
